Dementia Awareness (1 day)

Aims:

To develop participant’s skills and confidence in understanding and responding to client’s with dementia.

Objectives:

  • Understand classification of types of dementia
  • Practice using dementia assessment tools
  • Explore signs and symptoms of dementia
  • Develop interaction strategies for improving communication with dementia clients
  • Introduce Kitwood, personhood and malignant social psychology

Target Audience:

This is a level 2 course designed for anyone who has to support clients with dementia in their working environment. It will increase participant awareness and confidence levels and enable them to more effectively support and assess clients with this condition.

  • Personhood
  • Malignant social psychology
  • Role of Assistive technologies
  • Validation responses
  • Dementia stages
  • Evaluations and endings

Commentary:

The course covers a basic introduction to the types of dementia that can occur, how to communicate with a dementia sufferer, and methods of improving interaction. It also involves working within small group settings, and uses a number of case studies to explore themes surrounding dementia.

It covers the basic knowledge requirement as recommended by the National Care Standards, and can be expanded to cover in-depth assessments and training in the clinical tools used with dementia sufferers.
